An Abracadabra for Sustainability

We are on the brink of a climate apocalypse, where multiple interconnected issues are threatening our future. Climate change has already taken a humongous toll on the lives of millions of people. So if we are trying to get out of this crisis, the most important solution is to embrace sustainable development. Sustainable development is an overarching term which refers to a lifestyle that is perfectly fine-tuned to the needs of the present generation without compromising that of the future generations. To adopt this way of life, we must meet our wants in an eco-friendly manner. To realise this vision of sustainable development,we have a magical tool, green innovation or greenovation.

Innovation, in its essence, means to find new ideas to solve our daily dilemmas. So Green Innovation should be aimed at finding alternatives to the products and processes that harm nature. A typical example of greenovation is solar panels or wind mills. But other than these huge technological advancements, there are certain small footsteps, which will be a giant leap in the direction of nature protection.

Let's take an example. Using biodegradable straws made of coconut leaves, sugarcane etc instead of the single use plastic straws may seem a very simple change. But its impact is huge. Be it the biodegradable cutlery, made of water hyacinth or dried plantain leaves, all can light a new ray of hope in environment protection. That a tweak in our perceptions and outlook can open up new avenues for an eco-friendly lifestyle.Similarly we can expand this greenovation to other sectors, be it in the food sector, animal husbandry, construction sector etc.

A lesser explored area for greenovation is the fashion sector. One of the examplars from the fashion sector is a company called Frumat. Frumat transforms apple pectin, a byproduct of the juice industry, into durable, compostable leather. By upcycling industrial waste, Frumat reduces energy consumption in leather production and contributes to the circular economy, which is integral to sustainable energy goals.

To sum up, an out-of-the-box thinking or an innovative thinking can be simply superb in solving our many concerns regarding environmental degradation. Thus let greenovation be the abracadabra of nature protection.
